Composer’s Note

Writing a response piece is an odd thing to be asked to do, but when  the San Antonio Symphony approached me to write a response to Mozart’s Dissonance Quartet for their Mozart Festival, I clearly had to find a way to figure out just what “response” meant to me.

This 13-minute work is a roller coaster ride through the elements of Mozart’s quartet that rose to the surface of my ears. Not only did I respond directly to Mozart’s work, but I found myself being pulled into a commentary on the institution of the Classical string quartet as an archetype of practice and imitation.
